Sopwith Pup

As one of the most famous fighter aircraft of the First World War, the Sopwith Pup became extremely well known and has been reproduced many times as a scale model.

The Model

This CAD-designed, precision CNC-cut kit features an advanced tab-and-lock construction system that allows the components to align and fit together accurately. This approach significantly simplifies assembly, speeds up the building process, and provides a more precise and rewarding experience than traditional model aircraft construction methods.

My 1:3-scale Sopwith Pup combines a remarkably low airframe weight with a large overall wing area and generous wing chord. This results in an aircraft with exceptionally forgiving handling characteristics that is both stable and easy to fly.

The model is constructed primarily from carefully selected poplar and birch plywood. Balsa wood is used only for a small number of components where it is required to create the appropriate contours and shapes.

The engine cowling is authentically reproduced from formed aluminum, while all fittings and the forward aluminum fuselage panels are precision-machined and supplied ready for installation.

The wing, landing gear, and tail bracing systems are constructed from 2 mm steel cable with adjustable aluminum clevis fittings. The complete bracing system is supplied prefabricated and ready for installation.

Recommended Powerplant

A Fiala FM 250 with the optional starter is naturally the first choice for an aircraft of this type.

Kit

In addition to the construction plans and building instructions, the package includes all components required to build the model, as well as:

  • Wheels

  • Fuel tank

  • Control horns

  • Pilot seat

  • Instrument panel

Technical Description

Fuselage

The basic fuselage structure and formers are manufactured from CNC-machined plywood components and are prepared for installation of all required fittings and hardware.

The cockpit area is sheeted with 0.8 mm plywood.

Additional features include:

  • One-piece formed aluminum engine cowling

  • Prepared mounting locations for the servos

  • Provision for all required fittings and hardware

Wings

The wing system is divided into four removable panels, which attach to the fuselage and center-section/cabane structure.

Construction features include:

  • Two main pine spars with plywood shear webbing

  • CNC-machined poplar-plywood ribs

  • Kavan hinges for the control surfaces

  • Scale-correct rib spacing

  • Prepared servo mounting locations

Tail Assembly

The tail assembly is constructed from CNC-machined plywood components.

The horizontal stabilizer is a one-piece assembly, and together with the vertical tail can be easily removed from the fuselage for transportation or storage.

Landing Gear

The landing gear is constructed from a combination of wooden struts and aluminum tubing and features:

  • Bolted connections

  • Two-piece wheel axle

  • Fiberglass-reinforced construction

  • Rubber-cord suspension

  • Steel-cable bracing

  • Large spoked wheels

  • Foam-rubber tires
